Keeping your air conditioner properly maintained will lower energy and repair costs, prevent breakdowns and prolong the life of your equipment. Some maintenance jobs should be left to the professionals, but there is much that you, as a homeowner, can do to prolong the life of your equipment, keeping it running at peak efficiency.

:: Maintenance Tips ::

To maintain your air conditioner at optimum efficiency and the most important is to keep fresh and cool air circulation in your room.

Don't short cycle the cooling system

Air conditioners have a cooling system identical to a refrigerator's. It is important not to turn the unit off and then back on right away. Wait at least ten minutes after shutting the unit off to allow the pressure in the refrigeration system to equalize once again. This will prolong the life of your air conditioner.

Cleaning the Indoor Unit

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use water hotter than 40°C or polishing fluid to clean the unit.

Clean the Air Filter

Remove dirt using a vacuum cleaner. Wash the air filter with water. If badly soiled, wash it with soap or a mild household detergent. Let it dry and reinstall it.

Recommendation:

If the unit is operated in a dusty environment, clean the filters every two weeks, continuous use of these dirty filters will reduce cooling efficiency.

Cleaning the Front Panel

Gently wash with water and a sponge. Do not press the front panel too hard when washing. When use kitchen cleaning fluid (neutral detergent), rinse thoroughly. Do not dry the front panel under direct sunlight.

Replace/Clean the Air Purifying Filter

Remove dirt using a vacuum cleaner. For Solar Refreshing Deodorizing Filter, place under direct sunlight for 6 hours. Fit it back in place.

Recommendation:

Replace these filters every 3 years.

When Air Conditioner is Not Used for an Extended Period of Time

Dry the internal parts of the indoor unit by operating the unit for 2-3 hours using FAN operation (Cooling model) / heating operation with 30°C set temperature (Heat Pump model). Turn off the power supply and unplug. Remove the remote control batteries.

Recommended Inspection

After used over several seasons, the unit will become dirty and thus decreases the unit's performance. Depending on the operation conditions, a dirty unit may produce odour and dust may pollute dehumidification system. Therefore, a seasonal inspection is recommended in addition to regular cleaning. (Consult an authorized dealer).

:: Energy Saving Tips ::

Reducing Power Bills (Cooling model)

A key to reducing air conditioning costs is to limit the amount of heat generated within the home or apartment.

-Keep lights off when rooms are not in use. Lights generate heat that makes your air conditioner run more.

-Use awnings, curtains, or blinds to keep out direct sunlight. This will keep your house cooler.

-Eliminate activities in the afternoon that require a great deal of in and out through the doors of your home. This allows cool air to escape and hot air to enter the home.

More Efficient Air Conditioning

One of the most inexpensive and effective ways to reduce your air conditioning costs is to adjust your thermostat setting.

-The savings can be significant when you set your thermostat at 1°C or higher (Cooling model) / 2°C or lower (Heating model). For each degree you raise your thermostat setting, you reduce seasonal cooling costs by 10%.

-Use a ceiling fan or portable fan to supplement your air conditioning. A fan can make you feel a few degrees cooler so you can set your thermostat a few degrees higher and save on cooling costs.

-Be sure your air conditioner is not blocked. A free flowing air conditioner operates most efficiently. Filters should be checked every 2 weeks. Dirty filters may reduce cooling and heating efficiency.

-When air conditioning is on, keep doors and windows closed. Turn off kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans when your air conditioning is operating.

-Caulk and weather-strip leaky windows and doors.

-Shade your home from direct sunlight. Use shades, drapes and awnings to block the hot sun from heating up your home.

-If you suspect your air conditioning system is not cooling/heating properly, have it checked promptly. A unit that is having operational problems can cause extremely high bills.

-If your air conditioning equipment is older and less efficient, compensate by being extra careful about temperature settings, hours of operation and filter condition.

:: FAQ (General) ::
What size air conditioner do I need to condition my room?

Use the following chart to find the appropriate size air conditioner to use:

Area to be cooled / capacity (Btu/hr)

100 to 150 square feet = 7,000

150 to 250 square feet = 8,000

250 to 300 square feet = 9,000

300 to 350 square feet = 10,000

350 to 400 square feet = 12,000

400 to 450 square feet = 14,000

450 to 550 square feet = 18,000

550 to 700 square feet = 24,000

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce needed capacity by 10%.

If the room receives a lot of direct sun, increase needed capacity by 10%.

Add 600 Btu/hr for each person in the room if there are more than two people.

If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000 to 6,000 Btu/hr

If I purchase three units, can I use one remote control for all of them?

Yes, you may do so. It is recommended not to start the three unit at the simultaneously period to prevent a high load power consumption at start up. You are advise to start the air conditioner individually by pressing the remote control unit aiming directly to the air conditioner (please obstruct the necessary side of the remote control in order not to send any signal to other air conditioners).

Why is the air conditioner so noisy?

The blower and coil may be dirty. Or, the noise may come from the vibration due to uneven wall surface or a glass partition or a thin plywood partition, which the compressor operating noise could have been easily transmitted into the room.

Why is the air conditioner not cold?

Please check if the thermostat was set too high. Or, the selection of the operating mode could be incorrect. Or, there is insufficient refrigerant. Or, the unit is undersized. Or, the orientation of the room, e.g. facing direct sunlight. Or, poor distribution of air to the entire room due to the shape of the room. Poor location of air conditioner and blockage of the outlet by furniture, etc.

What is soft/dry mode?

Soft/Dry mode is used to de-humidify the room space. The unit does this by air conditioning for a minimum amount of time, which allows collection of moisture from the air without changing the temperature noticeably.

Why bad odour is smelled during air conditioner start up?

The bad odour might be come from surrounding environment. We would like to recommend using the Auto Fan Speed during air conditioner start up operation, this Feature is useful for deodorizing control.

The fan keeps cutting in and out. Is there a problem?

Panasonic units are designed to switch the indoor and outdoor fans on and off in order to provide the temperature conditions set by the user.

Do I have to change the filters? How often does this need to be done?

Air filters fitted to indoor units should be regularly inspected and cleaned. Initially check every 2 weeks, until some idea is gained as to how quickly dust is building-up. At the very least, air filters should be cleaned every month. Some indoor units are fitted with Air Purifying Filters, which are a smaller filter and are not washable. Individual instructions supplied with each unit should be carefully followed.

Whenever there is a power failure, and the power is restored, the split air conditioner switches itself on. How do I stop this from occurring?

Panasonic air conditioners are designed to operate so that in case of a power failure, it will return to the setting that it was on prior to the power failure. This is an in-built feature which cannot be altered. Once the unit has switched on, operation will resume as normal.

Why is there water leaking at the outdoor unit whenever the air conditioner is turn on?

The water leaking  phenomena is normal for outdoor unit because moisture from ambient air condensate at outdoor unit particularly at the 2-way and 3-way valve where the copper tube was connected. Or, the drainage could have been blocked due to some dirt being accumulated in the drainage pipe. Or, there is insufficient refrigerant.

Do we need to service the Condensing (outdoors) unit? If yes, how often?

You need to clean the condensing unit at least once a year to make sure the air circulation of the unit is not blocked. It can affect the cooling efficiency, a shorter compressor life and even your electrical bill. Sometimes, it is subjected to environmental condition, which requires a qualified technician to give recommendations.

Why does ice-forms on the copper pipes of the condenser (outdoor) unit?

There are two possibilities. Ice-forming on the discharged pipe (the smaller sized one) is due to insufficient gas in the system. Ice-formation on the suction pipe (the bigger one) could be caused by a dirty fan coil unit or, a dirty filter or, the indoor unit blower is not rotating.
